About:

In this November 2017 Focused Acceleration publication McKinsey Center for Business and Environment (global NPO consulting firm with a focus on social impact and civic engagement- find out more here) partners with C40 Cities (data driven NPO tackling climate change- find out more here) to engage city stakeholders with new frameworks to achieve greenhouse gas (GHG) emission goals of Deadline 2020 as part of the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Accord.

With a road map to accelerate urban efforts to reach these goals by 2020 and then by 2030, 4 action areas prioritized:

1) Decarbonizing the Electricity Grid

2) Optimizing Energy Used in Buildings

3) Enabling Next Generation Mobility

4) Improving Waste Management

In this report, McKinsey Center and C40 Cities outline how these infrastructure/policy changes can be integrated by 4 different cities typologies across the world. They strongly urge city officials embrace this responsibility and assert the indisputable necessity for collaboration/cooperation across a range of stakeholders in achieving emission target by 2020.

To further legitimize the focused acceleration plan’s efficiency compared to efforts from the overwhelming 450 different reduction options initially published in Deadline 2020, McKinsey and C40 Cities provides an illustrative graphic, contrasting the two approaches:
